Top 10 Tips for a DIY Inland Sea Adventure

The Inland Sea or Khor Al Udaid is a beautiful tidal inlet from the Arabian Gulf sea and one of the most stunning spots in Qatar. Majestic sand dunes reaching 60 meters alongside turquoise seas.

With summer almost beating upon us we grabbed the opportunity to do our first Inland Sea adventure.

Top 10 Tips for a DIY Inland Sea Adventure

1) PLAN

Plan where you are going, who you will be joining and the duration of your visit. Check the weather conditions, the terrain and route. Inform family and friends where you will be going as a precaution. Respect the Desert. Drive responsibly and always clean up after yourself.

2) SUV

The only vehicle one can use is an SUV which is in good condition with a 4×4 drive system. Deflate your tyres by Sealine Beach resort to approximately 15 psi or 1 / 1.2bars. Inflate tyres outside Al Meera after your visit.

3) ONLINE GROUPS

Facebook and Instagram groups to join for information: Qatar Four Wheelers

www.qatarfourwheelers.com

4) TOILETS

There are No Toilets in Inland Sea so be prepared.

5) 999

There are paramedics but it is safer to travel with a convoy of a few cars incase you run into problems. Be prepared for an emergency situation. Carry sufficient water incase of an emergency. For emergencies call 999

6) SUGGESTIONS

It is best to go with friends who have done it before. As it was our first time we were very thankful that there were experienced people with us. Purchase and take in what you need. If you forget something there is an Al Meera mini market keeping the basics available next to the entrance of Sealine Beach resort. Don’t forget to take all your trash back with you. Carry extra water!

7) VEHICLE

Ensure your vehicle is desert ready, you have a first aid kit, tow ropes, tracks and your cellphone is fully charged for emergencies. The driver and all passengers in the car must wear seatbelts at all times.

8) INLAND SEALINE APP

Download the Inland Sealine app to help guide you. From Sealine Beach resort to inland sea takes approximately 45minutes.

9) PACK

Carry sunscreen, swimming attire, towels, blankets, a jacket (yes the desert can get cold in the evening), gazebos, chairs, food and drinks (see my food list below for ideas!).

The water level is very low and had no waves. It was ideal for kids to have lots of fun. Inflatable water toys were perfect for the calm sea which is very shallow. The kids brought lots of items to play in the sand and had a blast.

10) BEST TIME TO GO

From May to October it is really hot and will not be ideal weather to visit. From 3.30pm I really started to enjoy the experience as the weather cooled down.

This is one of those “must do” experiences if you live in the Middle East. A great day adventure!

There are many companies that do a structured desert adventure. I will be posting about what is available in Qatar soon.

As with most grand last minute adventures there was a scramble to purchase everything we needed for the epic trek to Sealine.

As a South African, the most important part of a summer day expedition is the BRAAI (The SA version of a bbq).

My grocery essential list!

South African meat (I am biased).

Marinated food items from the Gourmet Meat section.

Sauces.

Spar has a large range of “Ready to Eat” Salads and Qatari sides such as Hummus, Baba Ghanouj and Wareq Enab.

Hot dog rolls and garlic rolls.

Drinks (water, juices and cold drinks) and ice

Fruit and local snacks.

Snacks (Crisps, marshmallows, nuts, sugar free snacks and crackers and sticks)

Tea, coffee, a flask and South African biscuits.

Charcoal.

Braai stand.

For the Kids: bucket and spade and inflatable water toys.

Disposable: plates, cups, forks, knives.

Gazebo.

Camping Chairs.

A Torch.

A shovel.
