There are many beautiful mosques in Qatar. Mosques are beautiful sacred places where muslims connect to their Creator.

Below are some of my favourite mosques in Qatar.

Education City Mosque

Education City Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques I have ever seen, emphasizing the richness and diversity of the Islamic heritage.

The 35 000m2 building can accommodate 1,800 worshippers indoors and 500 in the courtyards.

Two minarets which stretch up to 90 metres into the sky and point straight towards Makkah, Saudi Arabia. 2 000 tons of steel were used for the two large minarets.

Islamic calligraphy has been inscribed on almost all aspects of the building’s surface. The exterior of the mosque is covered with embossed verses from the Qur’an.

Representing the five pillars of Islam, the mosque rests on five main structural columns. Four streams of water flow from the surrounding gardens into the building, each representing wine, milk, honey and water

It was designed by Mangera Yvars Architects (from London and Barcelona) who was inspired by the relationship of “Knowledge and light”. The Quraan places great emphasis on the importance of knowledge in order to reach enlightenment.

All five prayers are performed at the mosque and the public is welcome to come in and tour the mosque.

Translation and Sign Language.

Every Friday for the Jumuah Khutbah (sermon), the Education City mosque provides headphones and devices whereby you are able to tune into the translation. Since there are a limited number of devices it’s on a first come, first serve basis.

Alternatively you could take your own earphones, install the Hearing Hotspot app which is freely available from either iTunes or google playstore. One will be required to connect to the education city mosque WiFi for the application to function.

From the app you have a selection of two translation languages either English or Urdu. The translation happens in real time from within mosque. The ECM also provides sign language translation to those which are hearing impaired.

To hire devices from ECM you are required to provide some sort of Identification which will be held by the guards until the items are returned. Two devices only are given per RP or passport.

Ladies facilities are available on the second floor. Ladies also have devices available for use. Children are welcome.

Qatar State Mosque

Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque (also called the Qatar State Mosque) is the National Mosque of Qatar.

This magnificent mosque is built in a traditional Arab design blended with modern artistry. The mosque covers a total area of 175,164 sq.m. The view over West Bay skyline from the courtyard is unparalleled!

We really enjoyed a previous planned tour of the State Mosque and Education City Mosque. Women were even given complimentary abayas and hijabs/scarves and we were guided around the mosque and library.

Mosques in Katara

-The Katara Masjid

One of the most beautiful and iconic Mosques in Qatar. Designed by globally-known Turkish mosque designer, Zainab Fadil Oglu.

The decorations of the Masjid of Katara were designed by a team of restoration specialists from Dolma Palace in Istanbul. The mosque features an outer surface garnished with turquoise and purple mosaic, and a wonderful interior design that adds even more glamour. The interior and exterior architectural designs, together with the minaret, the dome, and the prayer niche (mihrab) are all inspired by several famous mosques found in various cities and capitals of the Muslim world.

In addition to these notable aspects, the masjid abounds with artistic handicrafts, such as ornaments, inscriptions, and mosaic tiles.

-The Golden Masjid

Located in the heart of Katara near the amphitheatre. Embellished with extremely small golden pieces of tile to give the mosque it’s glowing gold sheen and designed in an Ottoman style.

Tips when visiting mosques in Qatar:

Visitors must observe more strictly the Qatar dress code.

Wear loose clothing that covers the arms, chests and legs (for men and women).

If women can bring headscarves it would be better.

Abayas are provided for tours.

Professional Photographers are no longer allowed at all inside the actual prayer hall of the State Mosque without permission (although outside the mosque with a mobile, photos are permitted).

Non muslim visitors to the State Mosque (visitors not performing prayer etc) may only enter the prayer hall with the tour guides so bookings are highly encouraged if people want to see inside.

Casual visitors may otherwise walk around the outside.
