Saturdays at Nobu Doha. High teas and Sushi Masterclasses

Nobu is located infront of the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Doha. An iconic 26,000 square-foot architectural masterpiece with its three levels is renowned for its exquisite Japanese cuisine while visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the turquoise Arabian Gulf.

I was invited by a friend to join her for Nobu’s Far-East version of an Afternoon Tea.

One is able to choose between two set menus, and can expect a variety of Savoury (Umami) and Sweet (Okashi) items. This was a first for me as I had never experienced a Far-Eastern version of afternoon tea. For me afternoon tea means dainty sandwiches and quiche with decadent mini cakes, scones and clotted cream. And not forgetting a soothing cup of english tea. So I must admit I was excited about the culinary adventure.

The high tea is priced at QAR 195 for the Classic Tea Set with a choice of one Ikaati tea or coffee.

The Sparkling Tea Set is priced at QAR 240 and includes a glass of rosé or mocktail, and one Ikaati tea or coffee.

Both Tea sets include Nobu “Matcha” tea.

The WOW moments for me?

For me the standout dish was the black cod which literally melted in your mouth and was the perfect start.

There is also a toss between the Crispy rice spicy tuna and the Crab cake aji amarillo aioli. Both for flavour and presentation.

I was extremely fascinated by the taste and texture of the honey tofu crème and loved it.

I would go back to Nobu just for the refreshing Açai Punch. There was nothing fake about this drink. Everything was fresh and one could see and taste the fresh blueberries, litchis, açai berries and a hint of ginger tones all blended into a slushy piece of art.

My suggestion:

As it is summer in Doha I would have preferred a mocktail with my savouries and instead of only a matcha tea option with my sweet I would have loved to dip that delicious salty shortbread biscuit in a lovely cafè latte at the end. Yes.. i know it is very NOT in keeping with the theme and the full eastern experience but my palate is not yet ready for a full on far-eastern trip.

To Sum it up…

Nobu is serving a decadent high tea experience in a sophisticated setting overlooking a breathtaking view. If you are looking for a venue and menu that will impress and a sunset view to make your friends or guests say WOW then Nobu is the place to visit.

Sushi Masterclass

Learn the secrets of modern Japanese cuisine at NOBU’S SUSHI MASTERCLASS.

A chance to learn from the famous Nobu Chefs is an experience not to be missed!

Adults: on the first Saturday of the month
Kids: on the last Saturday of the month

Time: 3-4 pm
Qar 400 per person
Qar 300 for kids

An ideal venue to get friends together to enjoy a sushi class. The classes are interactive with a demonstration of each technique by the head sushi chef and participants then had a chance to try out each technique with the help and guidance of the amazing sushi team. Thankfully Chef Junry Manlaran was always by my side as I would never have managed alone. All the sushi staff are on deck to help you. Staff are well-trained and efficient which comes from working in a well-oiled Nobu operation and makes it feel more like an individual masterclass.

We were taught everything we need to know about making sushi. From rice preparation, ingredient selection, how to prepare different types of sushi( Nigiri Sushi, Maki Sushi & Modern Temaki sushi) and the proper etiquette to enjoy sushi.

If you’re new to sushi like me or are not acquainted with Japanese customs, stepping into a sushi restaurant can be a daunting experience and these classes are the perfect answer.

Everyone was relaxed, there was lots of laughter, teasing and jokes which kept everyone going.

Vegetarians are also catered for during the sushi masterclass.

Each participant is given a goodie bag with their sushi to take away, Nobu chopsticks, step by step instructions, a chefs hat and a beautiful NOBU culinary class apron which is a great memento of the afternoon.

If you are looking for something fun, interactive and delicious to do on a weekend with friends I would highly recommend this class. I strongly suggest getting there early to enjoy a drink and relax in Nobu’s award winning restaurant with one of the best views over Doha before the class.

Please note:
1) participants must be 16years or over.
2) dress code : long trousers and closed shoes
