Camel Racing in Qatar

Camel Racing has been on my bucket list since I moved to Qatar.

Camel Racing starts around September (in September the races are mostly in the mornings) and the camel races end around April. The camel race track is located in Shahaniyah which is after Mall Of Qatar.

This weekend we watched the races and experienced the behind the scenes with Murex Qatar Tours.

The tour includes racing around the tracks, getting up close and personal with these magnificent animals at the start and finish line, detailed explanations about camel racing and the robots on camel backs and an English Speaking Guide

New In Doha tips:

The public can attend and there is no charge to attend but there are a few important issues that one should take into consideration if you choose to go on your own:

• Owners, trainers, spectators and police race around in their cars alongside the racing camels. The camels were not only racing-it felt like the cars were also racing.

🐪🚗If you were driving your own vehicle, it is risky and felt dangerous if you were not use to it and did not know where you should be, you could get knocked or be an obstacle in their way.

• If you go on your own, you do not find out the fascinating details of how it works etc and I do think the details, background and information is what made the experience so enjoyable.

• The tour included us standing next to the camels as they took off at the start line, standing at the finish line on the track as the camels came racing to the end and getting up close to camels and holding the robots.

•Transport to and from the race track is part of the Murex Qatar Tours and the bus departs from West Bay or Mia Park. If you choose to go yourself, the roads are good and there is plenty of signage.

Races can be cancelled at the very last minute so it is tricky and you do take a risk that it will not be happening on the day. Morning races happen around 5.30am -6am and afternoon times can be unpredictable. Today it was 2pm to 4pm

• I was told that at some camel races, the public is not allowed in and you can run the risk of being turned away.
