What to buy and bring when heading to Doha

Before moving to a new country we always start stressing which of our favourite things wont we get?

What do you bring from home?
After asking a few people who have moved recently to Doha or have always lived in Doha what did they bring when they moved to Doha or which items do they bring to Doha from home after a holiday these are the popular choices:

Personal hygiene products that you love might not always be available or can be very expensive.
– Skin and Hair products, creams, make up
– Books (Pornographic literature is not allowed)
– skincare products and moisturising Creams and eczema skin products.

– Tampons
– magazines as they are very expensive
– adult puzzles are very difficult to find anywhere in Doha
– Make-up for darker skin
– Elizabeth Anne’s products for kids
– Eno orange
– christmas decorations

-vanilla extract

– If travelling with prescription chronic medication check the list of medications that are not allowed in Qatar. Travelling with a letter from your doctor stating the medication name and the medical condition is always a good idea when travelling with an extended supply from your home country.

-favourite candies/gums
South African favourites:
-biltong
-milo
-Mayonnaise

(South African favourites Cross n Blackwell mayonnaise /Nola)
-“I love opening my freezer to find treasures such as frozen goolab jamoon or chevro, or homemade biscuits.”
-Ready fried onions for cooking
– chips / crisps such as niknaks and flings
– chocolates such as peppermint crisp, cashew nut and other cadbury chocolates and any mint flavoured chocolates
– caramel treat cans
– sweet chilli sauce
– ginger garlic minced
– Falooda powder / agar agar /china grass powder.

-corenzaC, citro soda

-Rooibos Tea, Five roses and Joko tea

-ouma rusks

-biltong and wors

Australian favourites:
– Twisties
– Tim Tams
– Vegemite
British favourites:
– Tea bags
– British chocolates
– British Biscuits
– school shoes. You can get Clarks in Doha but it is expensive

Items for babies that you can’t get in Doha:

-calpol,

-nurofen, benadryl

-teething products like anbesol,

-Ashton’s & Parson’s sachets,

-favourite dummies.

Imported favourites such as Vegemite, weetbix, pronutro and South African biscuits etc can be purchased at a much higher cost sometimes but not on an ongoing basis as shipments are erratic. My suggestion would be to purchase and keep extras of any item you like alot and find in the supermarket.
Prices of most products especialy baking products, spices and cooking products are more expensive than most countries. So if you are an avid baker perhaps bring the brands and items you like with you.

Medication with codeine is not sold in Doha and not allowed into Doha.

PROHIBITED ITEMS:

The following items are prohibited within Qatar and will be destroyed by Customs without any referral.

In the case of serious breaches of protocol such as the importation of narcotics the authorities will apply the full letter of the law resulting in severe prison sentences and legal action against the individual concerned.

• Pornographic literature, films, videos, DVDs, books and pictures
• Alcoholic beverages – all forms
• Pork products and their derivatives
• Wireless transmitters, satellite receivers and dishes
• Firearms, ammunition, explosives etc. and other weapons such as swords
• Large quantities of medicines and/or drugs. Reasonable quantities are permitted for personal use and subject to screening by the Ministry of Health
• All narcotics and non medicinal drugs in ANY FORM including dried poppies
• Political or religious materials of any form decreed to be offensive to the Qatari authorities and / or the Islamic Faith
• Ivory and / or any carvings etc. of same
• Items that may be used for gambling
• Statues

Clothing wise:

Summer temperatures range between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius.

In Winter one might need a sweater or jacket for the evenings but the temperature is still around 25 degrees Celsius during the day and 16 degrees at night

We would love to hear what you plan to bring to Doha.
